Natalia Makarova was born in Leningrad in 1940. She studied at the Kirov Ballet School and joined the Kirov Ballet in 1959. She won the Gold Medal at the Varna Competition 1965. Makarova defected to the West in 1970 and joined the American Ballet Theatre. Since then she has appeared as guest ballerina throughout the world. Her repertoire includes Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Hamlet, Apollo, Jardin aux Lilas, Dark Elegies, Pillar of Fire, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadere, Manon, Checkmate and Les Biches. |
